About SSR
Our academic principles
Social Sciences Research UK (SSRUK) was founded by a group of social science professors working across several UK universities, united by a shared commitment to supporting the next generation of scholars. This founding aim shapes every aspect of SSRUK’s academic principles.

Principle 1: Curiosity comes first
We believe that great research begins with a spark of curiosity. We welcome researchers who enjoy asking big questions, noticing patterns in the world around them, and wanting to understand why people, institutions, and societies behave the way they do. You don’t need to arrive with a fully formed research agenda; just a genuine interest in exploring ideas and a willingness to think deeply.
Principle 2: You grow by doing
Our programmes are designed to help junior researchers build confidence through hands‑on experience. You’ll work closely with a mentor who guides your thinking, challenges your assumptions, and helps you shape your project. Outside those sessions, you’ll take ownership of your work. Independent work is part of the journey, and we’re here to support you as you develop your own academic voice.
Principle 3: Integrity matters
Good research is built on honesty, respect, and responsibility. We expect our researchers to treat participants, data, and communities with care. Ethical thinking isn’t a box to tick; it’s a mindset that shapes how you approach every stage of your project.
